An Art Nouveau lithographic poster by Alphonse Mucha, titled ‘Tragique Histoire D’Hamlet, Prince De Danemark’, created in 1899 for the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt. The central image features Sarah Bernhardt as Hamlet, in dark attire with a sword, gazing towards a shadowy armored figure, framed by elaborate, curvilinear decorative borders. A smaller illustrative panel below depicts a reclining figure amidst flowers. Prominent French text reads ‘TRAGIQUE HISTOIRE D’HAMLET PRINCE DE DANEMARK’, ‘SARAH BERNHARDT, ‘ and ‘THÉÂTRE SARAH BERNHARDT’. The artist’s signature, ‘Mucha, ‘ is visible in the lower left of the main illustration. Printed on paper. 50x140cm
