A pair of rectangular Japanese lacquerware trays, one larger and one smaller, featuring a dark reddish-brown ground embellished with a dynamic arrangement of numerous butterflies rendered in gold, white, and earthy tones, some appearing to be mother-of-pearl inlay. The perimeter of each tray is decorated with a geometric fretwork pattern in alternating black and silver-grey. The undersides are marked with “MADE IN JAPAN” and Japanese characters, identified as 芝山 (Shibayama), indicating a specific style of inlay work.
